This is a home for an art collector, located on the cliff tops above St Clair Beach in Dunedin / Otepoti.
The initial concept for the house was by Saunders Arkitektur in Norway and developed and completed by Bell + Co Architecture.
Our clients original brief was for a sculptural and engaging two-bedroom home, to accommodate her art collection, and her visiting adult daughters.
The site sits well above Saint Clair beach with sweeping 180-degree views. The house curves and twists to capture views across Dunedin, the harbor, peninsula, Saint Clair Beach, and out over the Southern Ocean.
The tall three-story form rises up out of the site and presents an imposing wall on approach. The front door is identified only by a cast bronze handle, commissioned for the home by New Zealand artist Kate Newby.
Moving through the door into the entry gallery provides a view to the swimming pool to the left, and to the three-story high stairwell, with curved steel stair leading to the upper floors, and a steel passenger lift.
Significant art and sculpture within this space provides a taste of what is to come as you move up and through the house, including bold material, finish, and color selections by our client.
In addition to the strong visual connections with Dunedin and its wider landscape, the house provides great outdoor living with the various terraces providing the opportunity to follow the sun, and shelter from any winds.
The house is a true reflection of our client’s personality, and is very liveable, engaging, and comfortable.
