City House takes out the Best City House Award in the Home of the Year Awards 2016 announced at the Northern Club, Auckland last night. This house designed with Andrew Kissell is located on the city fringe of Auckland in a rapidly changing part of town. International judge Tom Kundig who is based in Seattle described the project as follows:
“I knew that this was going to be a good project to visit and I was not disappointed at all. I think it works on so many levels that are important to the future of architecture, which is to find those forgotten places that are relatively close to the CBD that people don’t consider residential neighbourhoods and densify the city. At a social level, I thought the building was terrific. There was a very skilled flow which is always important to a residential project. How does a family use this place, and do they flow through the building? How does the floor plan work between the public realm of the street and the private realm of the garden? At a conceptual level, it was very strong. Volumetric proportions were very skilfully done, the management of openness and privacy as you went through the building. All in all, I thought it was a terrific project.”
